TAKE HOME ASSIGNMENT (40%)

Answer ALL questions.

1. Mimi’s father holds up her favorite teething biscuit, deposits it under a napkin, and shows Mimi his empty hand. Ten-month-old Mimi, looking puzzled, fails to search for the biscuit. Why does Mimi find this object hiding task difficult? (5 marks)

2. When you show three-year-old Sheila some young coconuts, Sheila exclaims that they are watermelons.

  1. How does Piaget explain Sheila’s situation? (5 marks)
  2. Based on Piaget’s idea, discuss what you can do to help Sheila learn to differentiate between the two types of fruit. (10 marks)

3. Lena, mother of 4-year-old Jong, wonders why his preschool teacher provides extensive playtime in learning centers instead of formal lessons in literacy and math skills. Explain to Lena why adult supported play is the best way for preschoolers to develop academically. (5 marks)

4. Video-record yourself (or a colleague) during a literacy session.

a. Show your ability to scaffold the children as they read with you. You need to make sure that you probe and ask open questions to facilitate the children’s exploration of the story.

Remember the children should be doing most of the thinking, not you. Your job is to scaffold them.

Do not ask closed questions.

b. Based on Vygotsky’s theory, explain what took place during the literacy session in (a).
